Grade 2

Mrs.  Katie Polkow- 2nd Grade

Dear Parents,
I am so excited to be working with your children this school year!  This is a big year of development for your child.  They will continue to develop physically, mentally and spiritually.  Your child will be busy working and learning many new things.
You will love our Superkids Reading Program!  We will be learning about the Second Grade Superkids and reading really interesting articles in our Super Magazine.  In addition, we will be reading great books, learning new vocabulary and practicing our comprehension skills.  We will be writing our autobiographies in the first unit of writing.  Accelerated Reading testing will also begin.  Your child will love being one of Mrs. Simon’s Superkids!
In math we will begin with a chapter on number concepts.  We will move onto numbers to 1,000 and working on addition and subtraction math facts.  By the end of second grade the students need to know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.  Practice math facts at home.  We will have math facts timed tests.
In social studies we will be learning about the different types of communities.  We will learn about our state, our country and our world.  The second half of the year concentrates on science.
The second graders are beginning their preparation for First Reconciliation.  The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation helps up celebrate God’s forgiveness.
Please keep us in your prayers as we prepare for this important sacrament.
